It looks as though I drew a simple swirl, then repeated it several times (mirror vertical + connect + mirror horizontal + connect + repeat + skew) and layered that over the top of the sphere (I play around with lots of kaleidescopic imagery), then finally added some fuzziness via filters to try to achieve a photographic look, especially by blurring the edges to achieve a super focused effect.
It's good to see questions about whether this is a photograph - mission accomplished - thanks for the remarks
I moved this out of photography and into drawing.
